This weekend was the release of Marvel’s Black Panther. I saw it on Friday night, and I can’t believe it took me until tonight to review it! I’m sorry, everybody. It’s February, and we might have already had the biggest film of the year; this thing is already breaking records, and I’m so excited.
I often talk about some successful stories feeling familiar with a coating of originality. This is Black Panther. The doubting himself king, challenged by some of his people and an outsider looking to take the throne is nothing new, but the package we get it in is ridiculous! And the characters and acting is right there with it. But one of the coolest things about this film is that it’s not jammed-packed with silly Marvel cameos, yeah, we get the Stan Lee appearance…but the majority of the film takes place in fictional Wakanda, the most technologically advanced country in the world. Wakanda is hidden, thus, no Avengers. Which is fine with me. I’m getting tired of Thor or Tony Stark popping in for a quick joke. We get it. I will say that the final after-credits scene does contain a character from the Avengers/Captain America films, and I was not happy with that, but I’ll deal.
Now, let me vent a little. If you are upset, at all, that a film containing an almost exclusive African American cast and a bad-ass women army has done as successful as it has in the box office, especially for the reasons listed about the cast, you are the problem, not this film. I heard, and not to the surprise of anyone, a few people expressing concern that there were not more white people in this film. Really?? It’s seriously laughable. Go see any other film in the theaters right now, troll. To quote Blade, “Some motherf*****s always trying to ice skate uphill.” Sorry about that. I’m angry, and the Blade quote fits so well here.
Oh! The soundtrack is amazing as well. Go see this banger in a Dolby theater to get the full experience of the sound; you will not regret it.
Happy reading (watching)!
