Graphic Novel Review 360/365: Marvel Rising Squirrel Girl & Ms. Marvel

Hey, all!  I have some cool things coming your way in July as I end my quest of 365 blog posts in a row.  I appreciate you for reading.  After today, 5 posts to go!

Fans of the blog know that I am a fan of both Ms. Marvel and Squirrel Girl.  So when I saw a new team-up of these two crazy characters, I knew I had to review it!

This is issue #1, although, I hear there was a #0 issue where a lot of action went down!

Basic premise: Kamala Khan (A.K.A. Ms. Marvel) is taking a summer coding class taught by Doreen Green (A.K.A. Squirrel Girl), and in their class is a girl named Ember Quade that has the power to bring video game creature and characters into the human realm to wreak havoc.

Kamala and Doreen must team-up to take down “Emulator” and save the city!  They get some surprise help along the way, and while there are a couple of double-sized issues left in the crossover, the joy of this book comes in its humor and creativity.  I discussed the wedding of Batman yesterday, and the “double-sized” issue that was just extra ads.  Marvel does not do this here.  This is a legit double-sized issue, giving us the first issue as a Squirrel Girl issue and the second as a Ms. Marvel issue in the same story.  There are ads in the issue but nothing as intrusive or story-stealing as we find in the DC books from yesterday.

There is also a joy about the tone and mood of a Ms. Marvel or Squirrel Girl book.  If you are not familiar, go get an issue or trade featuring one of these amazing characters.  If you don’t dig it, I feel sorry for your soul, and you should give it to someone in your life with joy and happiness.  Expect bright colors, large panels, and squirrel infestations!
