Graphic Novel Review 357/365: Infidel

Please keep up with all of my old Graphic Novel Reviews here as I quest for 365 in 365 days! Or hit up #GN365 on Twitter.

Hey, all!  I have some cool things coming your way in July as I end my quest of 365 blog posts in a row.  I appreciate you for reading.  9 posts to go!

As I was locked out of my hotel room in Virginia for a bit today, Ronell was kind enough to let me chill in his room and read the first couple of issues of Image Comics’ Infidel.

Title: Infidel

Author(s): Pornsak Pichetshote, Aaron Campbell, Jose Villarrubia, and Jeff Powell

Publisher: Image Comics (2018)

Age Rating: 17+ (Through issue 2)

Ronell warned my about this book.  I read the first two issues, and damn, this book is intense.

I’m reviewing it with no copy in front of me since Ronell let me read it off of his iPad while I was waiting to get back into my room, so please forgive me for a lack of names and specific details; I returned his iPad.

Set current day, Infidel is about a Muslim woman that is married to a non-Muslin man.  He has a young child whose mother passed when she was very young, and now the new family lives with the man’s mother in an apartment building whose top floors were blown up in a terrorist bombing.

The people in the build, including the man’s mother (?), mistreat the woman because of her Muslim heritage, but it gets worse…the ghosts of those that died in the bombing are haunting the woman because of her cultural heritage as well.

The art is amazing.  Sketchy lines and colors fill the pages, leaving perfect openings for gruesome ghost attacks that, at times, come out of nowhere.  This book is not for the faint of heart.  It’s gory.  It’s thought-provoking.  It’s timely.  I have no idea where this thing is going, and I’m not going to tell you more than I already did, but holy cow.  One of the more interesting books I’ve read this year, and I will for sure be keeping up with these issues as they come out.  Not safe for work or the classroom.

Happy reading!

Eric
